Internship and Practicum

The goal of the fieldwork experience, whether through an internship or a practicum, is to provide students an opportunity to cultivate mentoring relationships with public health professionals though meaningful hands-on work that builds public health competencies.  

All NYU MPH students are required to complete a fieldwork experience prior to graduation, although requirements vary by concentration. NYU MPH students should refer to the Fieldwork Guide for Students and the link above to learn more about specific requirements and expectations for students. We encourage public health agencies to explore the Information for Organizations section to learn how they might collaborate with the NYU MPH program in offering unique and challenging opportunities for our students.

NYU MPH Fieldwork At-A-Glance

Since 2007, 290 students have undertaken internships/practicums in 29 countries:

• Latin America and the Caribbean: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Grenada, Honduras, Peru
• Europe: Austria, England, Slovak Republic, Switzerland
• Asia and the Middle East: Bangladesh, India, Israel, Nepal
• Africa: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda
• North America: United States (California, New York, North Carolina, DC)

Students have conducted fieldwork in the following public health sectors:

• 34% in non-profit organizations
• 30% in an academic setting
• 18% in government agencies
• 8% in multilateral organizations
• remaining 10% in hospitals, consortiums, private sector agencies, and foundations
